Skupina Children Of Bodom pochází z města Espoo, ležícího asi 10 kilometrů od Helsinek. Kapela byla založena koncem roku 1997, kdy také vyšlo debutové album Something Wild. Skupina ovšem existovala už delší dobu pod jménem Inearthed. Inearthed původně založili Alexi a Jaska v roce 1993. Brzy se k nové kapele přidali Alexander, Henkka a klávesák J.Pirisjoki. Nadějné seskupení natočilo a vydalo dvě dema: Ubiquitos Absence Of Remission (1994) a Shining (1996). Obě nahrávky disponovaly velice slušným zvukem. Tyto kolekce se zaměřením ještě značně lišily od pozdější tvorby kapely, šlo o death metal se silnými melodickými prvky.
Když se Inearthed rozešli se svým klávesákem, přidal se ke kapele Janne, který svého předchůdce nahradil více než dostatečně. Původně měl sice pouze hostovat při nahrávání prvního LP Something Wild, ale časem se stal regulérním členem seskupení. První dlouhohrající nahrávka měla vyjít u malé belgické nahrávací společnosti, ale ukázka materiálu se dostala do rukou Ewo Rytkönena, šéfa Spinefarm Records. Jemu se nahrávka natolik líbila, že okamžitě uzavřel s kapelou Inearthed smlouvu na tři desky. Členové kapely byli ziskem kontraktu příjemně překvapeni, zrušili smlouvu s belgickou firmou a změnili jméno kapely na Children of Bodom. Určitě je ani nenapadlo, kolik úspěchů získají pod tímto jménem za pouhých pár let, a to nejen doma ve Finsku, ale doslova po celém světě.
Krátce po vydání debutového alba v listopadu 1997 uzavřeli Children Of Bodom smlouvu s německou společností Nuclear Blast, která měla zajistit distribuci po Evropě. Brzy poté nahrála kapela novou skladbu Children Of Bodom, která vyšla jako singl v limitované edici. Ten se ve Finsku udržel na prvním místě singlového žebříčku nepřetržitě po celých osm týdnů!
V únoru 1998 proběhlo první Nuclear Blast turné, při kterém spolu s cob hráli Hypocrisy, Benediction a Covenant. Turné bylo velice úspěšné, přestože se ho nemohl zúčastnit Janne, který zrovna skládal závěrečné zkoušky na škole. Na klávesy tedy hostovala Erna, která se už z dřívějška se členy kapely znala.
Další turné COB následovalo v září, tentokrát s Night In Gales, Dismember, Agathodaimon a Raise Hell. Kapela hrála opět bez Janneho, kterého nahradila Alexiho přítelkyně Kimberly Goss, bývalá členka Dimmu Borgir a Therion. V mezičase připravovala kapela materiál na druhé album, kterému předcházel singl Downfall. Nová deska Hatebreeder vyšla začátkem roku 1999 a setkala se opět s obrovským úspěchem.
V červnu odehráli COB tři vyprodané koncerty v Japonsku. Na základě záznamu dvou vystoupení v Tokyu vyšlo koncertní album Tokyo Warhearts. V září proběhlo další Nuclear Blast turné s In Flames, Dark Tranquility a Arch Enemy. Tím, kdo tentokrát řádně potrápil klávesy, byl konečně Janne. Na začátku května 2000 vydali cob nový singl Hate Me!, který se opět dostal na první místo domácího žebříčku. Koncem července si ještě kapela zahrála ve spojených státech na Milwaukee metal festu XIV.
30.října 2000 vyšlo ve Finsku nové album Follow The Reaper. Vydání tohoto počinu v Evropě a USA bylo zpožděno o tři až čtyři měsíce. Za první týden se alba pouze ve střední Evropě prodalo přes 50 000 kopií! Začátkem roku 2001 odehráli cob na podporu desky evropské turné spolu s Primal Fear a Sacred Steel. Další koncertní šňůru odehrála kapela mezi 17. a 27. listopadem ve střední a jižní Americe. V září 2003 vyšel singl You´re Better Off Dead, který krátce po uvedení na domácí trh získal zlatou desku za prodaných 5000 kopií. V lednu 2003 vyšlo album Hate Crew Deathroll, které se ihned dostalo na první místo finského prodejního žebříčku.
V létě 2003 skupinu opustil Alexandr a nahradil ho Roope Latvala. Už s novou sestavou skupina vydala EP Trashed, Lost & Strungout, po kterém následovalo vydání alba Are You Dead Yet?. Na podporu nového alba se COB vydali na turné, kde natočili DVD Chaos Ridden Years - Stockohlm Knockout Live.
V současné době se skupina věnuje přípravě nového alba, které by mělo vyjít v příštím roce.
